Helping Dyslexic Young People Use AI Safely and Independently

AI is already becoming part of how many young people learn, communicate and organise their lives. For dyslexic learners it can offer some genuinely useful ways of reducing barriers, but simply having access to AI does not automatically build confidence or independence.

This practical session for parents and carers will explore how AI can support reading, writing, planning, revision and everyday learning, alongside some of the risks and limitations. We will look at simple ways of helping young people use AI effectively, check what it produces, protect their personal information and recognise when useful support may be becoming over-reliance.

We will also consider AI alongside more established assistive technology and reasonable adjustments, with the aim of helping young people develop approaches they can understand, choose and eventually manage for themselves.

David Curran is Assistive Technology Lead and Head of Innovation and Futures at Moon Hall School Reigate, a specialist dyslexia school for pupils from Years 3 to 11. He has worked in education for more than 25 years and has spent the past five years developing the school’s explicit teaching of assistive technology, digital independence and, increasingly, the appropriate use of AI.
