Description
Educational workshops that inspire empowered learning
For over 20 years, Positively You have inspired students to reach their full academic and personal potential. Dyslexia Sparks are proud to be funding four different highly interactive workshops this January to support dyslexic and neurodiverse students in Hull and East Yorkshire.
Some children face more challenges than others, and these workshops will support pupils to become more resilient, confident and prepared, thereby unlocking their potential and allowing them to be the people they want to be.
When: Saturday 18th January
Where: Eastfield Primary School
Workshops we’re hosting:
Mind Mapping – 9:30-10:30am
Suitable for school years 5-9
Mind Mapping, when used correctly, is one of the most powerful tools that students can use to learn and retain information. It accesses multiple areas of the brain to enhance learning and recall, drive higher-order thinking, and boost imagination and creativity. The techniques taught in the mind mapping workshop will help students develop advanced note-taking skills and learn better ways to plan, analyse, organise, present and communicate their thoughts. Aims of the session are:
- Help students organise their thoughts and develop control of their thinking processes
- Learn how to combine words and images to retain information
- Boost understanding and recall
- Encourage creativity while improving communication skills
This tailored group session improves learning, clarifies thought processes, and will leave students with a full suite of practical skills that they can apply directly to their learning journey.
Resilience Building – 10:45-11:45am
Suitable for school years 3-7
Turn adversity and setbacks into valuable learning experiences. Even very young children can face considerable challenges and feel the weight of pressure. The resilience workshop takes an honest appraisal of the demands placed on children today – especially neurodiverse students, inside and outside of school. We will show pupils unique and fun ways to find their balance, look after themselves, become resilient and take control of their future. Aims of this session are to:
- Encourage students to develop a growth mindset
- Identify difficult areas in their life and make positive plans to change them
- Challenge habitual thought patterns
- Build long-lasting resilience
We tackle the difficult topics head-on. This workshop is designed to help children face the pressures of expectations and scrutiny differently. We will support them to become more resilient to outside noise, understand their areas of difficulty, and look forward in a positive and inspired way.
Exam Busters – 12:15-1:15pm
Suitable for school year 10+
Don’t be fooled by the name. Exam Busters teaches skills that can be used all year round – not just during the stressful exam periods. Exams often bring a mix of anxiety and frustration, especially for dyslexic and neurodiverse students. Fear of comparison and underperforming can become too much. Students will leave this workshop feeling energised and enthusiastic. The goal is to help them feel more confident and capable, we will:
- Stimulate a positive attitude to learning
- Increase confidence raise aspirations
- Help with the retention of information and memory
- Give them techniques to alleviate stress
The practical tools will help students feel better prepared to handle their workload, overcome mental blocks, and manage time in exams. This course also teaches wider life skills such as preparation, relaxation, organisation, and support for mental and physical wellbeing.
Super Speedy Study Skills – 1:30-2:30pm
Suitable for school year 10+
A high-impact, interactive learning experience created to show students how to develop their study skills and adopt positive habits. Always a firm favourite, this workshop will help develop students’ retention and recall abilities with fun, practical techniques that can be applied to every subject in the curriculum. The goal is to:
- Raise standards of learning and cognition
- Encourage students to use a range of learning tools and techniques
- Inspire creativity and enthusiasm for studying
- Encourage students to take control of their learning journey
Dyslexic and neurodiverse individuals can often struggle with motivation for studying and they may require different ways of learning. This workshop will support students to develop their independent thinking and encourage them to become lifelong learners.
All attendees will also gain 1 year’s access to Positively You’s online portal of resources, to allow them to continue to benefit.
You don’t need to be a Sparks tuition student or have had a formal diagnosis to attend, all neurodiverse students welcome. Please note learners need to be comfortable to attend the workshops without their parent/carer present.
Book onto one or more of the free sessions and secure your child’s place.
Please select a ticket type to order and we’ll be in touch closer to the event.
