Racism towards East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) communities was both exacerbated and exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dishearteningly, the issue, and how to tackle it, has received limited scholarly attention in the UK (particularly compared to other western countries such as the US).
The event will gather British Academy ECRN members and others whose work focus on racial and social justice, migration, cultural politics, identity, and activism, among others. We welcome scholars whose study particularly focus on the ESEA communities. We also welcome colleagues who study other minority communities that are targeted by racism, aiming to inspire relevant scholarly examinations of the ESEA communities.
This event is featured by a keynote by Dr. Diana Yeh (City, University of London) on their rich experiences in studying anti-Asian racism. The talk will be followed by the co-creation of future research agendas on how to better understand and identify strategies to deal with racism towards the ESEA communities.
Dr. Diana Yeh is Associate Dean of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the School of Communications and Creativity and Senior Lecturer in Creativity and Social Justice at City, University of London. She is PI of the project ‘Responding to Anti-Asian Racial Violence through Community Care, Solidarity and Resistance’ (funded by Resourcing Racial Justice and the SCC Higher Education Innovation Fund, City), through which she launched ESEA Hub, which hosts an ESEA Scholars Corner. She was also PI of ‘Becoming East and Southeast Asian: Race, Ethnicity and Youth Politics of Belonging’ with Tamsin Barber (CI), funded by the British Academy/Leverhulme Trust.
The event is organised and hosted by Dr. Xin Zhao (Principal Academic in Media and Communication, Faculty of Media and Communication, Bournemouth University) and Prof. Scott Wright (Professor of Political Communication and Journalism, Deputy Dean of Research and Professional Practice, Faculty of Media and Communication, Bournemouth University).
This is an in-person event. It is open to ECRs in the network wide. The venue of the event is room P218 (Poole House, Talbot campus, Bournemouth University, BH12 5BB).
