The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network brings together ECRs across the humanities and social sciences disciplines, regardless of their funding source or background. Please note this event is for ECRs from the South West Hub only Event facilitated by Joelle Fallows and the Southwest ECRN Hub Interactive Map for getting to the event: https://www.bournemouth.ac.uk/about/contact-us/directions-maps/talbot-campus-interactive-map This ECR-focused event brings together researchers in Medical and Health Humanities at Bournemouth from across the faculties of Health & Social Science, Media & Communication and Science & Technology, inviting them to highlight and address the main challenges of working within this varied and interdisciplinary field. It will feature an expert roundtable and open discussion, followed by breakout groups and opportunity for networking activity for ECRs. Roundtable participants will be invited to speak for 5 minutes, drawing on their experience of research partnerships across disciplines. Suggested topics for speakers to address include, but are not limited to:
ECR attendees will be invited to submit questions in advance, which will be put to the panel by a moderator/chair, before opening the floor to further discussion. In the second phase of the event, ECR attendees will be put into breakout rooms to discuss how their own practice might address these challenges, identify areas of future support they require and reflect on their professional identity as an interdisciplinary researcher in this field. Sam Goodman is Professor of English & Communication. His research interests focus on formations of selfhood and identity in relation to popular literature, media and culture, particularly through the medical humanities. He is the author of The Retrospective Raj: Medicine, Literature and History after Empire (2022), British Spy Fiction & the End of Empire (2016), and co-editor of Medicine, Health & the Arts: Approaches to the Medical Humanities (2014), and Violence & the Limits of Representation (2013). He is a member of the Wellcome Trust Expert Review Group (2020-present), as well as the UKRI Talent Panel and Peer Review College (2016-present).
Dr Ann Hemingway is Professor of Public Health and Wellbeing at Bournemouth University UK she is a public health academic and registered nurse. Ann`s research is focused on the reduction of inequities in health and wellbeing through public health action. Ann is regularly commissioned to undertake international, and UK based research projects she also regularly receives funding from UK and international research funders. Most recently as BU lead on a EU Horizon 2020 funded ITN (Innovative Training Network) INNOVATEDIGNITY focused on digital innovation. This international project was completed during the pandemic successfully. She is a regular author in international journals with a specific focus on public health and the reduction of inequities in mental health and wellbeing.
Edwin van Teijlingen is Professor of Reproductive Health Research, in BU's Department of Midwifery & Health Sciences. He is trained as a medical sociologist and has published over 350 papers, most as part of different interdisciplinary teams, and often international teams. He has written about interdisciplinary and multi-method research. Edwin has conducted research in Europe and South Asia, especially in Nepal, Bangladesh, and India, for nearly two decades. He is co-editor of the book Academic Writing and Publishing in Health and Social Sciences published by Social Science Baha in Kathmandu in 2022.
Dr. Chris Chapleo is Professor of Societal Marketing at Bournemouth University. He is on the editorial board of two leading non-profit marketing journals and has published widely in international journals on marketing and branding, particularly in the non-profit and education sectors. He has also presented key notes and papers at many conferences and has combined this with consultancy and enterprise work for leading organisations. His current work concerns consumer behaviour around choices in health, green behaviours and effective branding strategies for non-profit organisations. Prior to his time in academia, he was director of a marketing agency and has held senior positions in marketing in the leisure and property sectors.
Dr. Ann Luce is a Professor of Journalism and Health Communication, working in the areas of suicide prevention and midwifery. She is creator of the Suicide Reporting Toolkit for Journalists and Journalism Educators and author of NHS England Postvention Guidance for Healthcare Workers. She works across disciplines and her work is regularly rejected.
