Educational outcomes for young adults who have experienced care at some point during their childhood are significantly worse than their peers (Driscoll, 2013). Care leavers are less likely to go to university and those who do enter HE face several barriers to success (Harrison, 2017).
This sandpit event brings together those from across the BA ECR network with stakeholders in the area of care experience in Higher Education. The purpose of the event is to support networking with the aim of developing new lines of research in understanding the influence of space and place on care experienced people’s experience of Higher Education.
This event will take place at the University of the West of Scotland (UWS) and has capacity to support 45 members of the British Academy Early Career Network and 5 key stakeholders invited from third sector organisations. The attendees are not expected to present at the event rather to meet, discuss and explore demands and challenges, in order to identify key priorities and research questions to improve care leaver students’ engagement with the structural dimensions of HE.
The event will be in-person only and hopes to establish a national network of academics and external partners interested in the area of care experience in Higher Education. The event will take place across the whole day at the UWS Paisley campus and refreshments, including lunch will be provided. To support the workshop there will a Padlet available to populate with ideas for consideration and the workshop will engage with a Ketso format to collect and collate the outcomes of the group discussions. The format of the day is anticipated to be as follows:
Event programme:
10am: Welcome and Refreshments
10:30 am: Padlet Introduction and Using Ketso Instruction
11am: 1st Group Discussion – What do we already know about the topic area?
12.30: Lunch (provided)
1.30pm: 2nd Group Discussion – What knowledge can we develop in this topic area?
3pm: Break
3:15pm: Group feedback and reflections
4pm: End
It is anticipated that the output for the event will take the following forms: a written report summarising the discoveries and outline a plan for subsequent research activity and a corresponding visual output which will help to communicate our discoveries clearly, ensuring that the wider audience understands, engages and retains the information; conveying complex ideas or emotions more effectively than words alone. As the event will collect data from the attendees to be used to inform further research activities and inform the visual output, consent will be required, and participant information and consent agreements will be provided in advance of the event.
The academic research team organising the event consists of Dr. Nicola Douglas-Smith, Senior Lecturer in Psychology at UWS , Dr. Thelma Okey-Adibe, Lecturer in Management, Leadership and Professional Development at Glasgow Caledonian University and Dr Lisa Reed, Lecturer in Education at University of Dundee. Questions can be directed to any member of the research team in advance of the event.
