The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network brings together ECRs across the humanities and social sciences disciplines, regardless of their funding source or background.

Summary of the event
This networking event has been designed specifically for ECR involved in education in its widest sense including Initial Teacher Education and disciplines with a research connection and interest in education. The event will provide an opportunity to network in a structured way around themes identified by participants in their registration before the event as well as hear from more experienced researchers in education with strong track records in the external bidding process.
Purpose
To facilitate collaborative research opportunities for early career researchers working in the field of education across the British Academy ECR network.
The event
- Keynote speakers sharing their knowledge and experience of shaping a career in the field of education research.
- Structured networking activities designed to support participants in identifying research collaborative partners in the South West.
- Opportunity to develop themes and research focus areas as the basis for building future research activity and bidding.
- Panel Q&A with a focus on successful bidding.

10.10 to 10.45. 10 minutes speaker slots – ‘My research journey’:
Associate Professor Verity Jones (UWE, Bristol)
Verity is an Associate Professor at UWE, Bristol. Whilst completing her doctorate in 2003, she did not return to an academic role and research until 2016. During this break she worked with charities, local government and education authorities across the UK. Verity has a long standing interest in education for sustainable futures, the public understanding of science, flows of knowledge and critical pedagogy. Her research looks to engage, explore and enable thinking around issues including water use, waste management, food systems, supply chains, racism, eco-anxiety and wellbeing.
Professor Leon Tickly (University of Bristol)
Leon is UNESCO Chair on Inclusive and Good Quality Education for All at the University of Bristol. He currently directs a UKRI-funded network plus in the area of Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures with partners in India, Rwanda, Somalia/ Somaliland and South Africa. His scholarship over many years has focused on initiatives to improve the quality of education for disadvantaged learners, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and on the attainment of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic learners in the UK. His work is informed theoretically by critical realism, postcolonial and decolonial perspectives and is underpinned by a commitment to social, environmental and epistemic justice.
Dr Fran Martin (University of Exeter)
Fran Martin is an Honorary Research Fellow in the Graduate School of Education, University of Exeter, UK. She has worked in education for 40 years, first as a primary school teacher and then, since 1993, as a teacher educator in the Higher Education sector. Fran has a background in geographical and global education and for the last 10 years has worked in partnership with a Canadian colleague with a focus on social and environmental justice, critical relationality and de/colonising educational relationships.

The British Academy Early Career Researcher Network can cover travel and accommodation costs for Network members, speakers and Consortium partners to attend the event. If this is required email your request to ecr_network@thebritishacademy.ac.uk. Please do this up 3 weeks before the event.
