The British Academy ECRN is supporting two upcoming workshops aimed at developing a research partnership to explore the feasibility of introducing a specialist alcohol service to rural Scotland.
The workshops are being led by Dr. Andrea Mohan from the University of Dundee and Dr. Elena Dimova from the University of West Scotland. These workshops build on findings from a project Andrea led, exploring a specialist alcohol service, the Primary Care Alcohol Nurse Outreach Service (PCANOS) based in Glasgow, in which alcohol nurses work closely with GP practices to provide tailored, person-centred care to people with alcohol problems who have challenges engaging with other community services. The findings of the project show that PCANOS has many benefits including supporting people to reduce their alcohol consumption and positively impacts on physical and mental wellbeing. A separate evaluation of PCANOS showed that it led to reduced contact with GPs, and reduced A& admissions.
There will be two workshops, one in Glasgow and the other in Dundee. Each workshop will be attended by representatives from Alcohol Drug Partnerships for rural areas in Scotland and other key stakeholders. Each workshop will focus on what is currently being offered in relation to specialist alcohol service provision across rural Scotland, and if there is scope for a service like PCANOS.
Andrea and Elena would like to invite up to five ECRs who have a background in substance misuse, rural populations or health economics to attend either a workshop in Glasgow or in Dundee. The dates and times for each workshop are:
- Glasgow – Monday 5th June, 10am-1pm; Advanced Research Centre, University of Glasgow
- Dundee – Tuesday 4th July, 1-4pm; 11 Airlie Place, University of Dundee, DD1 1HJ
Each workshop has a hybrid format, so there will also be an option for you to join in online. If you are interested in this event, please contact Andrea Mohan at amohan001@dundee.ac.uk.
Event Organiser: Dr. Andrea Mohan, University of Dundee and Dr. Elena Dimova, University of West Scotland and BA ECRN Members
The Network can cover travel and accommodation expenses for ECRs, speakers and partners to attend the event. This can be done in two ways: you can cover the costs and be reimbursed or this can be booked for you and details will be sent. If you require the latter you will need to let the team know 3 weeks before the event to give us enough time to book this for you. If you would like your expenses covered either way, fill in a copy of our Travel and Expenses procedure form available on the online community platform or by sending us an email at ecr_network@thebritishacademy.ac.uk.
