Calligraphy & Tea · 小雪 Ligth Snow
小雪 Minor Snow · Calligraphy & Intention The year's quietest gathering
Ely · Sat 5 December · Ely Museum · 10:30am–1:00pm 2.5 hours · 12 places
There is a moment in the Chinese solar calendar called 小雪 — Light Snow.
❄️ The quiet before the deep quiet. Two days after we meet, 大雪 Heavy Snow arrives, and the year turns toward its stillest point. We gather on that threshold — one year ending, one word beginning.
🖌️ CALLIGRAPHY · One Word, Written Slowly
Brush. Ink. Rice paper. No hurry at all.
You'll practise first — the weight of the brush, the way the ink moves, the breath before each stroke. Calligraphy is a settling practice; the hand slows, and the mind follows.
Then, when you're ready: one word. Or a few. Your intention for the year ahead, in English or in Chinese — I'll help you find the characters if you'd like them. Written slowly, the way intentions should be.
You don't need beautiful handwriting. The brush doesn't mind.

🍵 TEA
Two cups hold the morning. Seasonal, chosen for 小雪, Light Snow.

🌿 A DEEPER CLOSE
Like September's gathering, this one goes a little deeper. Before we finish, we sit in a circle with a guided visualisation — meeting the year ahead, gently — and each woman may speak her word aloud if she chooses. Something about saying it in a room of women makes it truer. There's no pressure. Witnessed or silent, your word is yours.
THIS GATHERING IS FOR YOU IF
December usually swallows you whole — and this year you'd like one morning that belongs to you before it does.
You'd rather begin the new year with one true word than twelve resolutions.
You're curious about brush and ink, and want to try with no one judging.
Something is ending, or beginning, and you'd like a quiet way to mark it.
YOU'LL LEAVE WITH
Your intention, in your own hand — ink on paper, ready for a frame or a drawer you'll open in spring. Your practice sheets, your noticing card, and a small tea takeaway. One clear word for the year ahead — and the stillness it was written in.
