After many years of East Coast Races held at Colne Yacht Club and then Stone Sailing Club we are returning to the old home of the race - West Mersea Yacht Club and we are grateful to the support of the club and committee for hosting the OGA once again. After several years without a small open boat (Class 5) race for what are essentially open MFOB type boats, we have decided it's high time to run that event once more, encouraged by the increase in small boat sailors within the East Coast membership and the enthusiasm of the MFOB fleet.
The event is outlined below. We hope many of you will arrive on Friday for Registration and socialising before the race on Saturday.
Full detail will be provided in the Notice of Race which will be available shortly. We will send it to all entrants when it is available.
Please use the attached form to enter your boat as soon as possible to help the organisers.
A separate form will be issued to buy your Race Dinner tickets on Saturday night once the details have been finalised. Race participants and spectators may use the form to order dinner.
Race Headlines
Class 1-4 boats will start at the Nass beacon and race either to seaward or up the Blackwater (weather dependant).
The Class 5 boats will hopefully use the same start but will sail a course staying close to West Mersea.
There will a buffet supper, beer and other drinks and the Prize-Giving in WMYC on Saturday night.
Please note - all boats racing must have an up-to-date OGA T(H)CF handicap.
Those without will carry a time penalty and be ineligible for trophies.
See this list to check your handicap status. If required, you can provide an online handicap form before the event. We will do our best to ensure boats arriving without a handicap can get one but time will be very limited on the day.
High Water at Mersea is 1557. The earliest start signal will be at 1130. Classes 2 to 4 will start first followed by Class 1 (Working) and finally Class 5 (Open). There may be multiple starts for Class 5 if we get the number of entries expected. See the Notice of Race for details of Race Briefings.
The Prizegiving will be at 1830 in the WMYC Clubhouse. (East Coast Race Trophy List.) Dinner will be available following prizegiving.
All boats racing are required to confirm that they have applied the the East Coast OGA Risk Assessment and to provide a ‘Skippers Declaration’ as part of their entry, confirming the Skipper’s details and their acceptance of the conditions of racing. Click on this link to the Skipper's Declaration..

Reeds NumbersRace entrants will be allocated a 'Reeds Number' for identification and given, at registration, two orange canvas banners with the number for display whilst racing. A £10 cash deposit is required. Moorings and AnchoringMooring availability will depend on boat numbers and local usage. WMYC and Peter Clarke’s Boatyard both operate moorings and will do their best to accommodate visiting boats. All boats arriving (during working hours) should call the moorings master on VHF channel 37 (M1), call sign YC1, and indicate that they are with the OGA East Coast Race. Moorings will be allocated where possible. Please do not pick up vacant moorings without checking with YC1. Larger boats may be required to anchor in the Quarters, and rafting may be arranged where appropriate. |
