GAVIN ESLER: EKEM POST AGM TALK
How Britain Ends: the stresses and strains resulting from Brexit. An evening with Gavin Esler.
PLEASE NOTE: The start time is stated as 07.15pm; you will be in a waiting room from that time and we hope to start as soon thereafter as possible, and no later than 07.30pm.
Gavin Esler is a household name. He has shared his skills, experiences and knowledge with all of us in our living rooms, as the main presenter of Newsnight, BBC Two's flagship political analysis programme, for twelve years until 2014. Since then, he has been a public speaker, a political
commentator and journalist.
He is the author of five novels and four non-fiction books, most recently How Britain Ends - English Nationalism and the Re-birth of Four Nations. It is a forensic examination of the way in which resurgent English nationalism is pulling the United Kingdom apart. It follows Lessons from the Top (a study of how leaders tell stories to make other people follow them), based on personal encounters with a variety of leaders.
Following his undergraduate studies at the University of Kent and an MA at Leeds, he began his journalistic career with The Scotsman, then The Belfast Telegraph, and within a year joined the BBC as Northern Ireland reporter. Six years later he began working on Newsnight.
The University of Kent awarded Gavin an honorary MA in 1995 and an honorary Doctor of Civil Law in 2005. In July 2014, Gavin was installed as the University’s sixth Chancellor.
He has reported from countries in Europe, Asia and the Americas, and he has interviewed many world leaders, which perhaps led him to write his non-fiction book on leaders and leadership, detailing how all great leaders - from Bill Clinton and Angela Merkel to Tony Blair, Margaret Thatcher,
and even cultural leaders such as Dolly Parton – are also great story-tellers: Lessons from the Top explores the three stories that every leader tells: Who Am I? Who Are We? And Where Will My Leadership Take Us. The book has led to a separate career lecturing audiences as diverse as business groups, university business schools and literature departments, plus military and other organisations interested in leadership and communications.
Interviewing leaders – people – successfully, requires a personal empathetic insight into others, as well as an understanding of people generally. The fact that Gavin has these skills is evidenced by his career successes and the books that he has written. No doubt his background, wealth of experience and knowledge have all contributed to his success.
EKEM, East Kent European Movement, is delighted that he is able to share his time and insight with
us in East Kent and further afield, in what certainly promises to be an exciting evening for us all.
