About the Event

Why is it so hard to talk about masculinity?
What does “being a man” really mean today — and who gets to decide?

As part of the global 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, we invite you to an open and honest event exploring how harmful ideas about masculinity impact us all — including men and boys.

Whether it’s pressure to “man up,” stay silent, or suppress emotions — the reality is that many of the traditional expectations placed on men are doing damage. To boys growing up. To relationships. And to women and girls.

This evening will feature a powerful talk by Matt Pinkett, who will unpack:

  • What modern masculinity looks like — and what it could look like

  • The links between harmful masculinity and gender-based violence

  • How shows like "Adolescence" are opening up new conversations

  • Why you — especially if you’re male — matter in making change

Followed by a safe, respectful Q&A session, where you're encouraged to ask questions, share thoughts, or just listen.

Who is this event for?

  • Men and boys of all ages (teenagers, students, dads, brothers, mates)

  • Anyone (any gender) interested in understanding the roots of gender-based violence

  • Community members who want to create safer, fairer spaces for everyone

No lectures. No judgement. Just real talk about how we move forward, together.

Why it matters

Ending gender-based violence isn’t just about changing laws — it’s about changing cultures. That starts with listening, reflecting, and learning. It starts with us.

Join us for an important conversation that might just change how you see things — and how you see yourself.

East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (Esdas) is the lead provider of the Surrey Domestic Abuse Partnership and a registered charity.

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual global campaign which runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day), highlighting the need to end violence against women and girls.  This event forms part of a number of events raising awareness and support to survivors and our community to help create a future where women and girls can be safe.  We would like to give special thanks to Reigate and Banstead Borough Council who have provided funding through the thriving communities fund.
