CANDLELIT WALK OF REMEMBRANCE
Standing together against Domestic Abuse
About the event
A woman is killed by a man every three days in the UK. 62% of these women are killed by partners or ex-partners and 70% are killed in the sanctuary of their home. These murders are brutal and cruel, and many are killed in front of their children.
As harrowing as these statistics are, they do not convey the enormity of the impact of these crimes and the deep-rooted culture of inequality and misogyny which enables them. They do not convey the deep lifelong suffering inflicted on the families torn apart, or the violence, rapes and abuse suffered by many victims before their death. They do not express the threat of danger many women and girls feel forced to navigate every day. (Taken from 'The report' by killedwomen.org)
At East Surrey Domestic Abuse Services our last annual report documented a 7% increase in referrals of 3,469 in total compared to 3,237 last year. Over 89% of survivors we worked with were at either high or medium risk of serious harm. 93% of survivors were female. 604 had children.
Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a story — and a community that can make a difference.
Please join us as we come together - to honour those whose lives have been affected by domestic abuse, and to remember those we have lost.
We will take a short walk together, by candlelight, from the meeting point outside The Belfry Redhill and the Light Complex to the Memorial Park, Redhill, where a new tree has been planted as a symbol of hope, strength, and remembrance.
At the park, there will be a short talk and moment of reflection by the newly planted tree.
Afterwards, Florrie’s Café will kindly stay open a little later for anyone who would like to share a warm drink and conversation.
Book your free place today - (Open to all genders and all ages)
East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (Esdas) is the lead provider of the Surrey Domestic Abuse Partnership and a registered charity who supports anyone living or working within Reigate & Banstead, Mole Valley or Tandridge who is affected by domestic abuse.
The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual global campaign which runs from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day), highlighting the need to end violence against women and girls. This event forms part of a number of events raising awareness and support to survivors and our community to help create a future where women and girls can be safe.
