In practice – Clare’s law and Sarah’s law

Clare's law, also known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme allows people to find out if a current or ex-partner has a history of domestic abuse, violence, or controlling behaviour.

Sarah's law, also known as the Child Sex Offender Disclosure Scheme allows parents, carers, guardians, and concerned third parties to ask the police if someone who has contact with a child has a record for child sexual offences or poses a risk.

DCI Jo Cooper who leads the Disclosure and Referral Team (DART) in Sussex Police will deliver a session on how Police process these applications, what led to the creation of the Sussex Police policy last year and how they are going beyond the national guidelines to ensure that people at risk are provided with the best service, and timely disclosures to enable them to make effective safeguarding decisions for themselves and their families. The session will include case studies and will enable questions from participants.
