Broaden your experience of learning anatomy with this one-day workshop led by acupuncturist and anatomist Vivien Shaw.

Classical Anatomy in Chinese Medicine.

We are delighted to welcome Vivien Shaw to teach an anatomy class for us at a London Medical School. Participants can broaden their experience of learning anatomy with this 1-day workshop. If you have ever been tempted to take part in anatomy by examining the human body directly through looking at prosections made from bodies donated to medical science, this is an amazing opportunity to learn about the human body and appreciate its connection with the Chinese Medicine Classics. Many will already be familiar with Vivien's anatomy publications, and preparation for the workshop recommends reading the following papers: 'Hiding in Plain Sight' and 'Was acupuncture developed by Han Dynasty Chinese anatomists?'

Studying with Vivien in person will allow acupuncturists to go deeper with their knowledge of classical anatomy in Chinese medicine.

The workshop will be held in the dissection room of one of London's medical schools, starting at 9am and finishing by 4.30pm. We will have a 1.5 hour break for lunch. Participants will have the opportunity to observe Vivien teaching acupuncture on the upper limb and lower limb.

About the workshop tutor: Vivien Shaw PhD, SFHEA, Dip Ac, MBAcC, FAS

Vivien trained in acupuncture over 30 years ago, qualifying in 1992. She is also an anatomist and a Fellow of the Anatomical Society. She was awarded her PhD through published works in Biological Sciences by Bangor University in 2020on the topic of ‘The Anatomy of Acupuncture’; exploring the idea that acupuncture meridians and points are based on the physical, visible human body, and were arrived at as a result of anatomical examination. She has taught anatomy at undergraduate and postgraduate level for many years to students on a wide range of degrees including Sport Science, Medical Science, Physician Associate and Medicine.

Please note: neither the tutor nor participants will be conducting any dissections, rather the tutor will explain anatomical examination through demonstration of human tissue specimens. You will be able to handle the prosections, and acupuncture needles will be provided for you to see where they go in relation to the anatomical structures found at key acupuncture points. Prior to the in-person day, we will host a 1 hour webinar on what to expect on the day.

Eligibility: Qualified acupuncturists, acupuncture students currently studying at an accredited institution, registered healthcare practitioners with an acupuncture qualification.
