Tackling climate change is priority for governments and businesses around the world – and we as economic development practitioners must act to drive change and create a more sustainable and prosperous Scotland. Net zero is fundamentally reshaping how Scotland’s economy operates, driven by legislation, regulation, climate risks and global market opportunities.

This net zero course is designed for economic development professionals working across Scotland’s local authorities, regional and national agencies, and other organisations. It will begin by defining net zero and examining wider sustainability priorities, before outlining how to assess your carbon footprint, create climate strategies, and also support others to do. The course will also provide context and summarise the wider system and other considerations for the journey to net zero, including:

• Ensuring a just transition
• Building resilience and adaptation to climate risks
• Market opportunities
• Greening jobs

The course will deliver real-world examples in a Scottish context and will be delivered interactively with opportunities to ask questions, share your own experience, and take part in group exercises. Key terms, suggested approaches, and useful resources will also be shared, leaving participants with a practical understanding of the importance of economic development in achieving net zero in Scotland.

This online CPD course will take place on MSTeams over the following dates:

• Tuesday 20th August, 9:30-11:30am.
• Tuesday 27th August, 9:30-11:30am.
• Tuesday 3rd September, 9:30-11:30am.

About the Course Tutor

Alison Wood is an entrepreneur and facilitator with strong experience of supporting change in complicated environments. She is the Programme Manager for Climate Springboard, an innovative partnership between the Edinburgh Climate Change Institute and the Royal Bank of Scotland designed to support SME’s understanding of how net zero is changing the economy and helping them to take action to reduce their climate impact and improve their resilience. Since 2021, she has built and led the Climate Springboard team, creating and delivering a highly effective and impactful programme which is unique in supporting SMEs from any sector with their transition into a zero carbon economy. The programme has helped over 150 SMEs calculate their emissions and take a wide range of actions, from supporting behaviour change and education to investment in renewables and energy efficiency.

Alison previously ran her own business as the co-founder of Floco, a period care start-up. Floco designed a comfortable period product sold globally and tackled the complex issue of period poverty through affordable period products and puberty education. This ensures she brings practical business know-how to the climate space, alongside hands-on experience of being a small business accessing and using economic development agency support.
