La Jarana AfroPeruana de Fiestas Patrias: Del Callejon al Buque
Peruvian Independence Special Jarana by the Thames: Del callejón al buque!
Join us for a very special Jarana on the occasion of 204 Anniversary of the Independence of Peru. This time Jarana takes place by the iconic London landscape by the River Thames, with a view of the Parliament and the Big Ben from the amazing Tamesis dock boat. We are bringing the Jarana from Peruvian callejones to the boat. This concert will transport you to the traditional jaranas of Peru, a gathering or party that used to take place in ‘callejones’, a communal living area. These Jaranas used to last up to 4 days of live music and dance. Jaranas in Peru are centred on the collective experience. The songs and dances resemble daily activities, such as cooking tamales and street vending, as well as larger reflections on social life. A legacy that stirs from the unique combination of Indigenous, African and European influences catalyses collective joy, resilience building and liberation. This gig is one of many series of an itinerant and vibrant Jarana outside of Peru, in London, the UK and Europe.
Jaranas keeps alive the connections to our roots while at the same time expands Peruvian culture to other realities, weaving interconnections through rhythm.
