The Elizabeth Bowen Society invites you to join our Reading Group on Wednesday, 25 March at 7:00 pm (GMT) to discuss The Last Day at Bowen's Court: A Novel (2020) by Eibhear Walshe. Beginning in 1941 during the Second World War and unfolding across the decades that follow, the novel imaginatively reconstructs Elizabeth Bowen’s long relationship with the Canadian diplomat Charles Ritchie, tracing how their enduring attachment shaped both her private life and the writing of The Heat of the Day (1949). Told through multiple perspectives and grounded in Walshe’s extensive scholarly engagement with Bowen’s life and work, the book offers a psychologically nuanced portrait of the author at her most creative and most exposed, while reflecting on love, loyalty, national identity, and the pressures of wartime. All are welcome!
