Early Career Researchers Meet, Greet & Talks
Join our bi-monthly meets to meet fellow Early Career Researchers from across the University interested in biology, engineering, design, computer science, bioethics and more. This is a great opportunity to meet ECRs from other schools and departments, share knowledge and ideas, establish connections and collaborations and find out more about EngBio activities such as funding calls and support.
Each session will host 1-2 lightning talks from ECRs covering research, tools & technologies, and fields & applications of synthetic and engineering biology. This will be followed by informal discussion (and free light lunch).
On Monday 15 June we are welcoming 2 talks:
Improving the fitness of recoded bacteria for applications in the gut
Dhriti Rao, MRC LMB
Dhriti completed her undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, specialising in Genetics. Currently, she is a second year PhD student in the Robertson lab at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, working on synthetic genomics for the microbiome. In particular, she is interested in improving the fitness of existing recoded E. coli strains for application in the gut.
Second Brain Decoding through Conformal Bioelectronics
Alvaro Castano-Medina, Dept. of Chemical Engineering & Biotechnology
I am a neurobiologist specialising in the Enteric Nervous System (ENS), the so called “second brain” in our gut. Since the start of my career, including my PhD at Imperial College London and The Francis Crick Institute, I have explored how environmental and physiological factors such as diet, microbes and hormones, shape enteric neural circuits. During my current postdoctoral research at The University of Cambridge I will develop new tools to study ENS dynamics in real time. Alongside research, I am deeply committed to mentorship, scientific communication, and public engagement
Venue: Postdoc Centre, 16 Mill Lane
Date: Monday 15 June, 12pm-1pm with light lunch
