Wed 6 May 2026 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM CEST Online, Zoom

We are pleased to invite you to the 20th session of the Entangled Histories Seminar Series, featuring Seda Öz (University of Delaware).

Title: Entangled Germanies: Remaking Cinema at the Borders of Cultural Memory

Abstract: This talk explores how German cinema repeatedly remakes its own stories and, in doing so, becomes “transnational without leaving home.” Seda Öz will develop the concept of internal transnationalism to describe remakes that never cross a national border yet traverse temporal, ideological, and generic boundaries between different “Germanies.”

Drawing on the screen adaptations of Hanns Heinz Ewers’s Alraune (1911) — from the Wilhelmine and Weimar eras to the Nazi and postwar periods — the seminar argues that remakes produced within a single nation-state can function as transnational adaptations. These films act as a barometer of shifting anxieties about gender, race, heredity, and eugenics. By treating regime change as a form of border crossing, the talk expands current models of transnational cinema and adaptation, suggesting that internal ideological ruptures can estrange a text as powerfully as geographic displacement.

Seda Öz is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Delaware (Department of English). Her research focuses on transnational cinema and adaptation studies, examining how political and economic conditions shape cross-cultural media flows. She is the editor of Adaptation in Turkish Literature, Cinema, and Media (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025) and the founding editor of the digital humanities project: Adaptation Today.
