About the Seminar
We are delighted to announce the upcoming 24th session of the Entangled Histories series, featuring Dr Elisa Cugliana from the University of Cologne.
This session will explore the intersection of historical minority languages and cutting-edge digital humanities, focusing on the documentation of Cimbrian ("Altez Gaschraibach") across traditional disciplinary boundaries.
In the Seven Communities of Asiago (Vicenza, Veneto), a dialect of Bavarian origin was spoken from the Middle Ages until the late twentieth century. Historically traced back to the eleventh century—when families emigrated from Bavaria to northeastern Italy during a period of famine—the Cimbrian variety of the Seven Communities is generally regarded as the oldest of the three surviving Cimbrian language branches. Due to its geographical isolation, Cimbrian preserved highly conservative, archaic features, while simultaneously developing unique phenomena born from continuous contact with surrounding Venetian dialects. Despite its immense linguistic, historical, and cultural significance, the sources transmitting this precious heritage have never been systematically collected or made fully accessible. A critically curated, annotated digital corpus has long remained an urgent desideratum. In this talk, J-Prof. Elisa Cugliana presents an upcoming project for a historical, multimodal, and linguistically annotated digital corpus and archive of the Cimbrian language, developed in collaboration with the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften. Utilizing state-of-the-art Digital Humanities technologies, the project aims to document the language and culture of the historical Terra Cimbra. Furthermore, the project integrates a strong citizen-science component, actively involving local and international communities (including the Cimbern Kuratorium Bayern e.V.) to bridge academic research and cultural preservation beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries.
Mandatory Admission Rules & Security Policy
To maintain a secure, respectful, and professional academic environment, the organising committee enforces a strict identity verification policy. Please read the following requirements carefully before registering. Failure to comply will result in the immediate cancellation of your ticket or non-admission to the virtual room:
- Full Legal Name Required: You must register using your full real name (First Name and Surname). Submissions containing nicknames, initials, pseudonyms, or altered names will be automatically deleted.
- Exact Zoom Account Matching: The name used for this registration MUST MATCH EXACTLY the display name on your Zoom account when joining the live meeting. If the names do not match, you will remain in the Waiting Room and will not be granted access to the session.
- Verified Affiliation or Profession: Every registrant must explicitly state their current academic/institutional affiliation. If you do not hold an academic affiliation, you MUST provide your current profession/occupation in the designated field. Incomplete, vague, or nonsensical entries (e.g., random characters, single words) will result in the immediate revocation of your ticket. This is not because we are nosy and want to pry, but it helps determine you are a real person and not a troll, hacker, or a Zoom-bomber.
- Strict Registration Deadline: For technical and security reasons, registration will close exactly 15 minutes before the start of the event. Last-minute or post-deadline registrations cannot be processed by the system.
