Description
Eroteme welcomes Pak Yan Lau & Darin Gray for a night of free improvisation with the material suggestions of electroacoustic experimentation. First in duo form and then joined as a quartet with sound-artist Lee Patterson & percussionist Charlie Collins. Expect complex architectures starting from minimal materials – insistent rhythms, amplified objects, barely hinted melodies & electronic effects as evocative as they are mysterious.
"Pak Yan Lau, one of the most original pianists of the new European creative scene, has the ability to build complex formal architectures starting from minimal materials -- insistent rhythms, barely hinted melodies, electronic effects as evocative as they are mysterious. Darin Gray uses his long experience as the backbone of many improvisational groups with a painstaking work on timbre and a deep and multiform sound, providing a solid support to extemporary creations that have the solidity of pondered compositions. The music of the duo develops on wide structural strings, elegantly combining the continuous surprise of free improvisation with the material suggestions of electroacoustic experimentation, in a game of references and narrative developments almost cinematic, which tell a fascinating sound world, strangely familiar yet constantly new and surprising." --Nicola Negri, Centro d'Arte Padova, Italy.

Pak Yan Lau, born in Belgium, with roots from Hong Kong and now based in Brussels is a sound artist, improviser, musician and composer, who has developed over the years a rich, dense and captivating sound universe from prepared pianos, toy pianos, synths, electronics and various sound objects. Skilfully blending electro-acoustic approaches, she explores sound in a bewitching way, merging different sound sources with poetry, magic and finesse.
Her solo efforts were documented among others on the excellent recording “BOOKS” (2015), magnificent wooden object-trilogy released on the Silent Water label where it explores in 3 distinct parts the world of synthesizers-samplers-electronics, then the world of harmonics and metallic basses of various “toy pianos”, and finally the interior of a prepared grand piano, transforming its conventional sound into an enveloping tense sound weave.
As an improviser she has shared music with wonderful musicians such as Chris Corsano, Akira Sakata, Darin Gray, Tatsuhisa Yamamoto, Tetuzi Akiyama, Mette Rasmussen, Rie Nakajima, Toshimaru Nakamura, Susana Santos Silva, Manuel Mota, Paolo Angeli, Lynn Cassiers, João Lobo, Giovanni Di Domenico, Norberto Lobo, Mathieu Ha, Mori-Shige, Daysuke Takaoka, Manja Ristic, Lionel Malric, Audrey Chen and many more.
She has toured different festivals and venues in Europe, UK, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan

Lee Patterson has devised and performs with a selection of amplified devices and processes. Whether working live with amplification or recording within an environment, he has pioneered a range of methods to produce or uncover complex sound in unexpected places. From rock chalk and springs, to aquatic plants and insects, Lee eavesdrops upon and takes inspiration from places and situations otherwise considered mute.
Lee's collaborators have included some of today's most respected experimental musicians, artists and filmmakers, including Angharad Davies, Rhodri Davies, Luke Fowler, Rie Nakajima, Vanessa Rossetto, John Tilbury, David Toop, Tetsuya Umeda, Mika Vainio, Jennifer Walshe and many others. His work has featured in various exhibitions and festivals, and on UK TV, BBC Radio 3, 4 and 6, Resonance104.4 FM and on radio stations worldwide.

Charlie Collins is a creative percussionist, free polyrhythmic drummer, and sound artist, based in Sheffield, UK. His performances explore the boundary between pure sound and rhythm, frequently incorporating metal percussion and/or freely associative drumming. Early recordings for cult labels Industrial, Fetish and Doublevision were soon followed by collaborations with many of the pioneers of free improvisation, while his interest in East Asian percussion and rhythm technique is displayed in his current work with komungo player Eun-Jung Kim, pianist Yoko Miura, and visual artist Bongsu Park. He is one of a handful of musicians to have played both Derek Bailey’s Company Week and Top Of The Pops.
