ESEA Sisters in Nature: Rye Meads to Broxbourne

Sun 12 Apr 2026 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Ramble through Rye Meads

Join us to celebrate spring and warmer times on this 6-mile walk through Lee Valley, Hertfordshire.

Officially kicking off our 2026 series of walks, we’ll spend some time exploring the wetlands of Rye Meads Nature Reserve before making our way south along the River Lea to Broxbourne.

Rye Meads is a Site of Special Scientific Interest situated along the River Lee, renowned for its reedbeds, kingfishers, and birdwatching hides. If we’re lucky, we may be able to catch some of the wildlife that are easing their way into spring.

Looking forward to seeing regular and new walkers!

Accessibility of event

For our nature walks to run as smoothly as possible, we try to determine an appropriate ratio of walkers-to-organisers for each event, based on the complexity, terrain and activities involved. This is why spaces are limited.

To ensure as many people are able to join us as possible, do make sure that you’re available to join us upon sign up. Needless to say, please do not turn up on the day if you haven’t registered.

That said, we understand that life happens, and in the event that you can no longer join us, we’d really appreciate it if you can let us know as soon as possible and cancel your ticket (via the manage order function), so that those on the waitlist can pick up your spot.

Transport bursaries

As part of our ongoing commitment to accessibility, a limited number of transport bursaries are available for this event.

Apply here by Saturday 28 March, and we'll get back to you with an update by Monday 30 March.

Waitlist

For those on the waitlist, when you are notified of an available space, the space will be offered on a first come, first serve basis. If the link takes you to the waiting list again, this means the space has been taken. There is no need to sign up for the waiting list again to be notified if future spaces become available. Please do not e-mail us to ask if there are any spaces left if the status of our sign up page is still “sold out”, this will be accurate.

If you’ve any other questions, do reach out via email (ESEASistersNatureWalk@gmail.com).

What to bring with you and keep in mind

  • As always, terrain may get muddy due to weather, so please ensure you have appropriate footwear that you won’t mind getting dirty, and waterproof layers of clothing – just in case

  • Please also ensure you bring snacks and water to stay nourished and hydrated

How we keep our walks safe

  • For each of our walks, we have routes mapped out with designated group leaders guiding the path ahead. We communicate via WhatsApp group chat to ensure the group is together and that everyone is okay

  • We do not share details of the route on Instagram for safety reasons. Further information of the route and where/when we meet will be shared directly with you closer to the date of the walk

  • By booking this event, you agree to your contact details being shared with ESEA Sisters for organising purposes

  • At the beginning of our walk, we will be doing a short intro and check-in with the group, confirming the pace of the walk and frequency of breaks

  • Remember this event is for East and South East Asian (ESEA) women, trans, non-binary, and queer folks only

Photography and videos will be taken at this event. These may be used for future ESEA Sisters marketing, publicity, and fundraising, including but not limited to social media. We will be asking all attendees for their consent prior to the start of the walk, and there will be an opportunity to opt-out from this.

About the organisers

ESEA Sisters

A volunteer-led collective of women, trans, non-binary and genderqueer folk of East and South East Asian (ESEA) heritage. Initially formed in 2021, ESEA Sisters in Nature organises monthly gatherings in nature for our community members to connect and reflect on the importance of solidarity, making connections between community care, climate justice, and collective liberation. As folks with lived experience of racial and gender-based violence, we are learning to reconnect with nature, our bodies and each other by practising trauma-informed healing practices, while exploring different corners of the UK together.
