**Some history
A cantus is a very old tradition in the Flemish student life and was originally spoken in Latin. Since the general level of Latin among the Belgian student decreased during the years, the cantus was more and more in Dutch or English, the common language. Nevertheless, a few points of the tradition were kept in honour and will be briefly explained here.
The “senior” leads the evening. She is in charge and everyone should listen to her. The “Cantor” is the entertainer of the cantus. He is the one who will tell us which song we sing and how it will be sung. He also tells people how to drink beer and how much. He keeps order during the cantus by giving punishments.
The cantus starts with the club song. Everybody stands up as respect for the ESN song and put his/her/their right hand on their heart. The song “Io Vivat” is like a Holy song for us and will also be sung standing up and with your hand on your heart. The rest of the songs will be sung the normal way.
BEER IS A HOLY DRINK, and one should treat beer with respect. So, it is not allowed to spill it or pour it away. This will be watched closely!!! If anyone throws with beer, he/she/they will be KICKED OUT!
Normally, three or four parts build up the cantus. Logically, each part is separated by a break, a “tempus commune”. The cantus will be divided in a few main parts and one silent part. During the silent part we will sing traditional cantus songs without music backing us up. You make a complete fool out of yourself if you start shouting during this part. So, please, respect this tradition.
Some vocabulary now:
• “Ad fundum”: it means you drink your glass to the bottom. So finish it at once.
• “Corona”: translated it means the circle. It is used to split up the room, so the “left corona” are the people sitting at the left, and so on. When the cantor says that the left corona sings the first strophe, only the people at the left are allowed to sing the first strophe.
• “Prosit Corona”: When the senior shouts this, we all stand up and put our glass in the air, we reply with “prosit senior” and we wait till she says “Ad fundum”. Before drinking our glass, we say: “prosit senior, prosit corona” and finish our glass. (“Prosit” means “cheers”)
• “Silentium”: VERY IMPORTANT. It means silence, of course. Everybody shuts up and listens to the senior. If you aren’t silent, you will be punished! The senior will use a hammer to make his point more clear.
• “Cantus ex, tempus in”: This is the end of the cantus and the start of the break. Hurry to the toilet, you will need it.
• “Tempus ex, cantus in”: End of the break, the cantus continues.
These are the most common used latin expressions. Besides that, don’t worry, it will all be in English!
This is one of the most amazing nights and we hope the list doesn’t scare you. Just see the reaction of the people and after 5 minutes everybody will get the point and it will be great.
