Secrets of Life Well Lived: Ravenna's Mosaic Mysteries

We invite you to travel with us virtually to Ravenna, a city that boasts eight UNESCO World Heritage cultural sites, yet remarkably remains under the radar. The treasures of Ravenna include many early Christian monuments, decorated with glittering mosaics created over a thousand years ago.

Continuing our popular online series, "Romagna: Secrets of Life Well Lived," this fascinating and informative conversation (live and in English) will introduce you to Dr. Maria Concetta Muscolino. The former Director of the National Museum in Ravenna as well as Director of the School for Mosaic Restoration, Dr. Muscolino, will share her passion for and extensive knowledge of Ravenna's rare and breathtaking mosaics. 

Drawing on her intimate, direct experience with these remarkable works of art, Dr. Muscolino will describe how, over time, the ideologies, dreams, and hopes expressed through the mosaics of Ravenna changed. She will also discuss how the techniques and colors used in their creation evolved along with the ideas, first representing nature in all its splendor and later showing the light of transcendence, the glory of Christ and the power of the church.

A rare expert in ancient mosaic art, Dr. Muscolino has supervised all the restorations of the mosaics of the eight early Christian and Byzantine monuments in Ravenna, inscripted since 1996 in the list of the UNESCO World Heritage. She will be able to answer all your questions about mosaics and help you fully appreciate the unique value of these powerful installations, and perhaps inspire you to want to see them for yourself!
