The fight for the ECHR: What is at stake?
Wed 29 May 2024 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM BST

Description
Brexit is a calamity. It has damaged our economy, broken our politics, and made us weaker on the world stage.
Now, the people responsible for Brexit want to remove the UK from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), the international court set up in the aftermath of the Second World War to protect people from tyranny.
Since the UK became a member of the ECHR, the court has intervened 466 times to uphold human rights against the government.
The ECHR protects your right to a fair trial, to liberty and security, to freedom from slavery and human trafficking, to equality and freedom from discrimination, your right to family life, privacy and property as well as your freedom of speech and freedom from torture and ill-treatment.
We are calling on Rishi Sunak to commit to our membership of the European Court of Human Rights because it is the last line of defence of our rights and freedoms. To support this mission, we launched the petition to keep the UK in the ECHR and this is why we are inviting you to this webinar to discuss:
- What the ECHR is;
- What is at stake if the UK were actually to leave?
- Why the ECHR is important, and ask;
- What are the important moments when the ECHR has protected our rights?
To discuss this vital issue, we have brought together three of the leading experts on the ECHR. On the panel for this event we are honoured to be joined by:
- Dominic Grieve KC PC – Dominic is a British barrister and former politician who served as Shadow Home Secretary from 2008 to 2009, as Attorney General for England and Wales from 2010 to 2014, as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Beaconsfield from 1997 to 2019 and as the Chair of the Intelligence and Security Committee from 2015 to 2019. Today, Dominic is Vice President of European Movement UK (Source: Wiki).
- Jessica Simor KC - Jessica is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in public/regulatory, EU and human rights law. Jessica spent time working on legal issues in the European Commission Environment Directorate in Brussels, in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and in the Human Rights Ombudsman’s office in Sarajevo. In 2016, Jessica was the UK’s nominee for Judge at the European Court of Human Rights, and she is Chair of the Bar European Group and is on the Bar Council EU Law Committee. She is a Visiting Professor at LSE and Goldsmiths (Source: Matrix Chambers).
