Description
Join us for our last webinar of 2024, National Identity, Britishness and Pro-Europeanism: The Role of National Identity in the Journey Back to Europe, with Caroline Lucas and Professor John Denham.
In the age of Reform UK and Brexit, the question of national identity has become a vexed one - one often co-opted by the far right, and those who espouse inward-looking, anti-European politics, especially in England.
This webinar is an opportunity to delve into the nuanced relationship between Britishness and European identity as we navigate the path towards renewed engagement with Europe.
Our speakers will share their insights on how national identity shapes political discourse and public opinion, and discuss strategies for fostering a pro-European sentiment while honouring British cultural heritage.
We will open-up questions such as:
- On our journey back to Europe, do we need to offer an alternative vision of national identity, one rooted in our history of collaboration and allyship with our neighbours?
- If so, what could this look like, and what are the perils of ignoring national identity as we campaign for a return to the EU?
And few are better qualified to speak to this topic.
Caroline Lucas is Co-President of European Movement UK and the former Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion from 2010-2024. Caroline's latest book, Another England: How to Reclaim Our National Story, asks us: "The right have hijacked Englishness. Can it be reclaimed?"
Professor John Denham is an academic and former Labour Party Minister, serving under Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband. He was the Labour MP for Southampton Itchen from 1992 to 2015.
