Join Barrister and Human Rights Lawyer, Dr Anna Loutfi, Maya Forstater and others, in a debate about protected beliefs. Why should any belief be "protected"? And why some beliefs and not others?
TERF or Trans? Whether it is Islam, Transgenderism, Gender Critical views, Christianity or any other religious and/or philosophical world view - why should any of them have special protection in the law?
In a free society, you should be free to express any opinion and view, but should certain beliefs have special protection?
Proposition: Dr Anna Loutfi
Dr Anna Loutfi is a practising employment / human rights barrister and legal researcher. She holds a PhD in legal history and is especially interested in how law intersects with politics and ‘culture wars’. Her new podcast, De Facto, launches this year, and aims to provide cutting edge legal commentary for a lay audience. Anna comments widely on issues that touch on how law is applied, and she is concerned with the importance of a shared legal value system across communities in order for the Rule of Law to work, and how misunderstood political correctness can lead to a breakdown in how justice is done or seen to be done.
Opposition: Maya Forstater
British researcher and campaigner known for winning a landmark 2021 employment appeal case, Forstater v CGD Europe, which established that "gender-critical" beliefs—the view that biological sex is immutable and not to be conflated with gender identity—are protected under the Equality Act 2010. She is the co-founder and Executive Director of the advocacy group Sex Matters.
