T52. Tricolour Cyanotype with Maria Solaguren-Beascoa

Fri 24 Jul 2026 15:00 - Sat 25 Jul 2026 14:00 CEST Centre Civic Pati Llimona, Carrer del Regomir, 3, 08002 Barcelona

In this workshop, participants will explore the tricolour cyanotype process built through separate red, yellow, and blue layers. The session focuses on understanding how layered printing, toning, and bleaching interact to produce a full colour image.Participants will learn the core principles of tricolour cyanotype, including calibration, negative preparation, and accurate registration between layers. The emphasis is on how the sequence of layers and chemical treatments shapes the final colour result. The process begins with the red layer, which is toned with madder root and left to dry, followed by the yellow layer, bleached with sodium carbonate, and finally the blue cyanotype layer to complete the image. Careful attention is given to drying times and colour interaction so participants can observe how each stage transforms the image step by step.Detailed technical instructions will be provided in an English handout, allowing participants to continue the process independently after the workshop.

Outline

  1. Introduction to the principles of tricolour cyanotype printing
  2. Overview of calibration and preparation of printing negatives
  3. Printing and toning of the red layer with madder root
  4. Printing and bleaching of the yellow layer with sodium carbonate
  5. Printing of the blue layer and completion of the tricolour image
  6. Review of results and discussion of colour balance and layering

Participants must bring:

  • A prior understanding of the cyanotype process is essential, as it will not be covered during the workshop.
  • At least one colour photograph must be sent in advance to mariasolagurenbeascoa@gmail.com by the 1st of May.
  • Images that predominantly feature blue, yellow, and red tones work best for this process.
