Join Toni Hatten-Roberts, Ollie Lovell, and colleagues for a day of in-depth training in how to get the most out of the Explicit Mathematics Program. This is a session both for currently practicing EMP schools, and those schools interested in trying out the EMP.

In this session, we will cover:

  • An introduction to the Explicit Mathematics Program
  • A demonstration of EMP in action 
  • How to use Daily Reviews and Quick Teach
  • How to use Lessons
  • How to use Fluency resources
  • How to analyse quality of implementation to drive continuous improvement
This training is driven by the principles of effective professional development. This includes quality explicit instruction, retrieval, and rehearsal.

This is a session not to be missed!

Toni-Hatten Roberts

Toni Hatten-Roberts is one of the most accomplished teachers Australia wide, having recently been awarded the Commonwealth Bank Teacher of the Year Award for 2022 Teaching Fellows. In 2016 she received the prestigious National Institute for Direct Instruction (USA) Educator of the Year award and is still the only Australian teacher to ever have won this award. She is the author of the Centre for Independent Studies publication “The Need for Speed: why fluency counts for maths learning”. Toni has a wide and diverse experience in education having served as a teacher in early childhood, primary school and secondary school; a regional advisor for mathematics, science, outdoor education and gifted education; a Head of Curriculum; a Deputy Principal; a Principal; and a Director of Education. Toni is currently a Director and Lead Consultant for COGlearn and is a co-founder and Executive Director of Education of Mastery Schools Australia, now with 5 campuses around the nation delivering high-quality instruction to students in need through the science of learning. Toni’s original research into the impact of verbal rehearsal to reduce cognitive load was recognised through her participation in the International Conference of Learning Sciences in London in 2018. Toni has consistently brought her practical knowledge and refined expertise regarding primary mathematics education to the EMP to support its development at every turn. COGlearn has also been the founding sponsor of EMP.

Ollie Lovell

Oliver (Ollie) Lovell has taught in the public and private sectors, as well as higher education, for over a decade. He is host of the popular Education Research Reading Room podcast, now in its 8th year and with over a million downloads. The writer of three Amazon bestselling books for teachers: Cognitive Load Theory in Action, Tools for Teachers, and The Classroom Management Handbook, Ollie is nationally renowned as an educator who is able to clarify, codify, and communicate the best that research and practical experience has to offer time-poor teachers. In his day job, Ollie is the Director of Steplab Australia, a professional learning platform that provides schools with everything needed to systematically improve teaching. Ollie has brought his deep knowledge of Cognitive Load Theory and education research to every facet of the EMP, adding system design expertise along the way too. Ollie also designs the professional development for the EMP.

Kaitlyn Minahan

Kaitlyn Minahan is a dedicated educator who has been part of Mastery Schools Australia since 2021. In addition to her classroom teaching, Kaitlyn serves as an instructional coach, supporting teachers across the Gold Coast and Victoria Mastery Schools campuses. Kaitlyn has also spent the past two years working with COGlearn, coaching educators and delivering demonstration lessons in schools across the country. Kaitlyn is highly skilled in Direct and Explicit Instruction, student engagement strategies and is passionate about evidence-based teaching practices that drive student success. She has extensive experience in designing Australian Curriculum–aligned units and supporting teachers to deliver high-impact instruction in their classrooms. Kaitlyn also works with the Explicit Maths Program (EMP) team, helping to implement the program in schools across Australia.


Public Transport to the venue:

Windsor Train Station is a 5-10 minute walk and buses stop at
the top of the school on Lutwyche Rd. Use the translink app
for most convenient times and journeys.

If travelling by car:

There is limited parking available on campus for visitors to
Windsor State School; however there are many street parking
options in the street surrounding the school.

On arrival:
All visitors to Windsor State School are directed to enter via
Lutwyche Rd, Constitution Rd or Harris Street gates.
Registration will be located at the Hall on the middle level of
the campus.

Cancellation policy

Cancellation and refund requests will be processed as follows:

  • 30 or more days before event: 100% refund
  • 2 or more weeks before event: 50% refund or ticket transfer available
  • Less than 2 weeks before event: ticket transfer available
