Shout, Grow, Mend: Stories of Disability
Shout, Grow, Mend: Stories of Disability
Need help?
Following the success of Explore York’s recent showcase of Shush, Snip, Rip, which explored the histories of disabled people inspired by the city’s archive collections, the exhibition returns with a new performance-based curation by the award-winning, disability-led theatre company Next Door But One, artist Stephen Lee Hodgkins, and Explore York.
What happens in the past doesn’t stay there—it sends ripples throughout the years that follow. If left unaddressed, these ripples can grow into irrepressible waves that come crashing down on us. Or put simply: history risks repeating itself. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in the treatment and exclusion of disabled people throughout history. How far have we really come? Only by unpacking the archives, learning from the past, and applying those lessons to our present can we begin to answer that question.
Join us for a Playback Theatre performance which encourages attendees to share their own stories from 2025 connected to York’s history of disability
