Global Palliative care for the 21st Century
Professor Catherine Evans, Director of Cicely Saunders Institute,
Palliative care is needs driven individualised care that puts the person, and those important to them, before their disease. This presentation considers the way forward for global palliative care, encompassing three areas: 1) Demand for palliative is rising rapidly with ageing populations; 2) Problem that healthcare systems are poorly designed to meet complex care needs; and 3) Solution health system strengthening with integration of palliative care in all health services
Catherine is a Clinical Professor of Palliative Care, Cicely Saunders Institute of Palliative Care, Policy, and Rehabilitation, King’s College London, and Honorary Nurse Consultant, Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust. She is the Director of the Cicely Saunders Institute (Interim) and Deputy-Director of the King’s Clinical Academic Training Office. Catherine’s research focuses on integration of palliative care in the community for adults with multiple conditions, including dementia and frailty. Her interventions incorporate new models of community palliative care, use of person-centred outcome measures for holistic assessment linked with clinical decision aids, and digital healthcare for remote assessment and timely management of care. As a senior clinical academic nurse, she is passionate about building research capacity in nursing, midwifery and allied health professionals, both nationally and internationally.
