Arresting the Momentum: From Guidelines to Decision-Making in End-of-Life Care with Non-Invasive Respiratory Support

Presenter: Dr David Wenzel, University of Leicester

Abstract: In this talk, Dr Wenzel will describe how a quest to develop better guidance for withdrawing non-invasive respiratory support led to a deeper exploration of end-of-life decision-making. Drawing on document analysis, interviews and ethnographic research, he will examine what guidelines can, and cannot, do, and explore how treatment momentum, clinical authority and the work of making dying understandable shape decisions to continue or withdraw respiratory support.

About the Speaker: Dr Wenzel is a physician-researcher and PhD candidate at the University of Leicester. His work explores end-of-life care, clinical decision-making and the use of non-invasive respiratory support. Combining clinical practice with qualitative and ethnographic research, he examines how technology, guidelines, professional culture and relationships shape dying and care experiences.
