Join the Impact Centre for Palliative and End-of-Life Care at King’s College London on 12 November at 14:00 for a one-hour, virtual webinar on specialist palliative care and its role improving patient experience, reducing bed days and saving money.

The webinar will share important new research regarding the economic benefits of specialist palliative care. The research, published in Palliative Medicine, demonstrates that hospital- and home-based specialist palliative care for adults represents excellent value care: reducing NHS costs, supporting people to die out of hospital and reducing bed days. For England in 2022, specialist palliative care is estimated to have supported over 20,000 people to die outside of hospital, saved approximately 1.5 million hospital bed days and reduced system expenditures by £817 million. Dr. Peter May, health economist and the lead author of this paper, will join us to present the findings, followed by an opportunity for questions and discussion.

The Impact Centre for Palliative and End-of-Life Care has produced bespoke briefings applying the estimates from May et al. to the local (ICS) level. If you would like access to the briefing for your area, please email impact-centre@kcl.ac.uk and specify your ICS.

In light of the upcoming Modern Service Framework for palliative care and end of life care, and the aims set out in the Neighbourhood Health Framework to reduce non-elective admissions and hospital bed days for people at the end of life, we hope this webinar will be of interest to commissioners, ICS leads, service leads, practitioners and policy makers. Please feel free to disseminate this invitation to your networks.
