The Dream + Weaving Our Dreams Workshop

We are joining the international Palestine Cinema Days initiative once again for a special day of screening and collective memory. Alongside the film, we will reflect on what our individual hopes and dreams of liberation will look like and weave it into a collective dream with words written on ribbon, and woven onto a loom made with sticks collected on a windy Sunday walk.

The Festival ::

Born from Filmlab Palestine, Palestine Cinema Days is a global, traveling annual festival. With a decentralized presence across multiple venues and cities worldwide, the festival seeks to give visibility to Palestinian cinematography, preserve the history and memory of its people, and decentralize the voices that challenge the colonial and imperialist narrative.

Featured Film ::The Dream (Mohammad Malas, 1980, 45')

Synopsis: Filmed in 1980 in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon (including Sabra, Shatila, and Borj el-Barajneh), Syrian director Mohammad Malas interviewed children and teenagers, asking them about their dreams. In the Arabic language there is a phonetic compatibility between the word “Dream” and the word “Film”, and often the person asking and the one answering get them confused, so Malas use the word Film instead of Dream.

The film captures an intimate, poignant and deeply human portrait of a displaced generation holding onto hope, imagination and identity amidst the harsh realities of exile. This documentary filmed in the Palestinian refugees in 1980 is the only one to choose the dream instead of the reality, since the public was capable to know about their daily share of suffering and death that those uprooted from their homeland.

The Dream won the International Prize for the best creative documentary in FIPA 88 because of Malas’s originality of his approach and the richness of his inspiration.
