Inside the Gate: Knockvicar Alpaca Farm, Co. Roscommon (Morning)

This Inside the Gate Open Farm Day is organised by Farming For Nature and is an opportunity to visit a farm and see the important work that farmers do for nature in your local community. This event is open to families, and will be held on different farms across the country on Sunday August 30th. You must purchase a ticket to attend as numbers are limited (first come, first served). Adult tickets cost €5 and kids (under 16 y/o) go free!

What to expect

Knockvicar Alpaca organic farm borders Lough Key and is surrounded by woodland. A herd of alpacas are kept on this farm and Andrew Chilton and his family run alpaca trekking as well as produce alpaca fleece into pillow and duvet products. They also have dexter cows and there is an apiary on the farm where honey is sold commercially.  This farm tour is for all age groups. 

Some highlights may include:

• Meet the farmer and tour the farm.
• Meet some alpacas and learn about them.
• Come see some bee hives in actions and how honey is made.
• See how we farm organic livestock.
• Come look at our amazing habitats and find out what lives in them - hedgerows, meadows, woodlands, bird/bat boxes, Lough Key.

Other information:

• We have a suitable place outside for a picnic so bring some if you wish.
• We can offer simple refreshments (ie tea, coffee, scones) in exchange for a donation on the day.
• There is a toilet onsite.
• The farm walk is not suitable for people with limited mobility (wheelchairs) or buggies. 
• Bring some cash if you would like to buy some honey from us.
• No dogs allowed.
• Please wear suitable clothing and footwear (this is a working farm). Dress for the weather.

FFN is a non-profit organisation and any money raised is circulated back into the farming community. FFN is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Services.
