Inside the Gate: Calverstown House Farm, Co. Kildare

This Inside the Gate Open Farm Day is organised by Farming For Nature and is an opportunity to visit a farm and see the important work that farmers do for nature in your local community. This event is open to families, and will be held on different farms across the country on Sunday August 30th. You must purchase a ticket to attend as numbers are limited (first come, first served). Adult tickets cost €5 and kids (under 16 y/o) go free!

What to expect

Join Kim and Mirielle McCall on their mixed livestock farm in County Kildare, where farming with nature has always been at the heart of what they do. Explore wetlands, woodlands, species-rich grasslands and thriving wildlife habitats while discovering how thoughtful, low-input farming supports both biodiversity and productive farming. With years of experience, plenty of stories to share, and a passion for inspiring others, this is a wonderful opportunity for families to experience a farm where nature truly flourishes.

Some highlights may include:

• Meet the farmer and tour the farm. 
• See the ruin of a Jacobean structure, the original medieval village of Calverstown was on the farm in front of it. 
• See ancient trees. 
• See suckler cows and sheep.
• See the family orchard. 
• Visit numerous ponds and meadows - learn about various farmland habitats and the wildlife they support.

Other information:

• Children are welcome under strict supervision because of ponds, livestock etc.
• Some of the walking will be through rough areas with possible nettles or thistles - please wear suitable clothing and footwear. 
• There will be tea/coffee/light refreshments available on the day.
• There will be a toilet available.
• No dogs allowed.
• Please wear suitable clothing and footwear (this is a working farm). Dress for the weather.

FFN is a non-profit organisation and any money raised is circulated back into the farming community. FFN is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Services.
