Inside the Gate: Dunnes Farm Pastured Eggs, Co. Kildare

This Inside the Gate Open Farm Day is organised by Farming For Nature and is an opportunity to visit a farm and see the important work that farmers do for nature in your local community. This event is open to families, and will be held on different farms across the country on Sunday August 30th. You must purchase a ticket to attend as numbers are limited (first come, first served). Adult tickets cost €5 and kids (under 16 y/o) go free!

The Dunne Egg Farm is a pasteurised eggs and tillage farm outside Maynooth, Co. Kildare. The land has been under regenerative farming system operating under the principles of conservation agriculture for the last few years. As a result there has been a significant increase in biodiversity and a return of numerous bird species to the farm - you might get to see barn owls, skylarks, sparrowhawks, kestrels, buzzards, woodpeckers, wood pigeons, lapwings, yellowhammers and more.

What to expect

Visiting our farm, you will get a chance to see our regeneratively grown crops, see our cover crops in full bloom. Meet our animals, dogs, horses, sheep, bee’s, possibly pigs, our livestock Guardian dogs and of course the hens. The farm tour will start at 2.30pm sharp so make sure you are there by that time if you wish to join the tour. 

• Meet the farmer and tour the farm.
• Pick blackberries or other edibles.
• Collect eggs.
• Observe bee hives/honey processing. 
• Depending on what ripens by then, we should be able to see spring barley and spring beans. I would see the other crops already harvested before the open day. 
• Our managed hedgerows will be demonstrated and our summer cover crops.

Other information:

• We can offer simple refreshments (i.e. tea, coffee, homemade sandwiches) in exchange for a donation on the day.
• We have a suitable place for a picnic so bring some if you wish.
• There will be a toilet available.
• We will have for sale on the day pasture raised eggs available, some frozen sausages, rashers, chops etc from our pasture piggy’s. Hopefully some honey and possibility of some pasture raised chicken.
• The farmyard is OK for buggies or people with limited mobility. However in order to see the animals we need to walk through gravel pathways.
• No dogs allowed.
• Please wear suitable clothing and footwear (this is a working farm). Dress for the weather.

FFN is a non-profit organisation and any money raised is circulated back into the farming community. FFN is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Services.
