Inside the Gate: Reidys Organic Farm, Co. Kerry

This Inside the Gate Open Farm Day is organised by Farming For Nature and is an opportunity to visit a farm and see the important work that farmers do for nature in your local community. This event is open to families, and will be held on different farms across the country on Sunday August 30th. You must purchase a ticket to attend as numbers are limited (first come, first served). Adult tickets cost €5 and kids (under 16 y/o) go free!

What to expect

This is an organic farm consisting of a long narrow strip from the sea to the hills, with plenty of habitat in between. Livestock include Pigs and Sheep but mainly Dexter Cattle. We practice conservation grazing with the cattle to optimise specific habitats for Nature and also extend the grazing year.

We will start with a quick chat with history/heritage of farm as well as a talk through the farming system and farm habitats. Highlighting the unique topography of the farm from sea to mountain landscape.

Some highlights may include:

• Meet the farmer and tour the farm.
• Pick blackberries or other edibles.
• Observe bee hives/honey processing.
• The yearly grazing cycle including conservation grazing.
• Meet the animals - Dexter cattle, few hens and ducks around the house. A Dog. 
• Learn about the machinery used on small scale farm. 
• Demonstration of the use of technology on small farms, such as cattle GPS collars & drone technology.
• Explore habitats from beach to mountain
• Visit the Natterjack toad ponds
• Learn about Bokashi, the fermentation of Farm yard Manure

Other information:

• We have a suitable place inside for a picnic so bring some if you wish.
• We will be providing light refreshments like tea, coffee and scones etc on the day in lieu of a donation.
• Local honey for sale - bring cash. 
• There will be a toilet available.
• The farmyard is OK for buggies but not elsewhere on the farm. 
• No dogs allowed.
• Please wear suitable clothing and footwear (this is a working farm). Dress for the weather.

FFN is a non-profit organisation and any money raised is circulated back into the farming community. FFN is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Services.
