Inside the Gate: Fitzsimons Farm, Co. Cavan

This Inside the Gate Open Farm Day is organised by Farming For Nature and is an opportunity to visit a working farm and see the important work that farmers do for nature in your local community. This event is open to families, and will be held on different farms across the country on Sunday August 30th. You must purchase a ticket to attend as numbers are limited (first come, first served). Adult tickets cost €5 and kids (under 16 y/o) go free!

What to expect

Join Gerry Fitzsimons on his organic beef farm in Co. Cavan to discover how farming with nature can produce healthy food while supporting biodiversity. Explore his grass-fed system, diverse pastures, native birch woodland and low-input approach, and hear how a shift to organic farming has helped nature flourish across the farm.

Some highlights may include:

• Meet the farmer and tour the farm
• Pick blackberries or other edibles
• Pick apples or other fruit
• See the farm animals
• See vintage tractors and some hay machines
• See 2 wildlife ponds 
• Visit a small wildflower meadow 
• See a variety of trees, woodland, mature hedges and learn about the different creatures that rely on these habitats 

Other information:

• We have a suitable place inside for a picnic so bring some if you wish.
• We will be providing light refreshments like tea, coffee and scones etc on the day in lieu of a donation.
• There will be a toilet available.
• Buggies are OK around the farmyard only. 
• No dogs allowed. 
• Please wear suitable clothing and footwear (this is a working farm). Dress for the weather.

Ticket cancellations up to the 23rd of August will be refunded in full; any tickets cancelled after the 23rd August will not be refunded.

FFN is a non-profit organisation and any money raised is circulated back into the farming community. FFN is supported by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the National Parks and Wildlife Services.
