Building Energy with Rokiah Yaman

What could community energy look like if we designed it around the resources, needs and possibilities of a place?

For this Campfire in our Designing with Energy series, we'll be joined by Rokiah Yaman to explore community-scale energy and circular systems through the example of an innovative project at R-Urban Poplar in east London, where food waste from local homes is being turned into biogas to power a community sauna as part of a wider experiment in connecting food, energy, waste, water and community life.

Rokiah will share what they're learning from the project and invite us to think about what community energy could look like when we start designing with the resources already around us.

About Rokiah

Rokiah Yaman is the co-founder of Mad Leap, which develops small-scale anaerobic digestion and other circular waste systems. At R-Urban Poplar, Mad Leap's anaerobic digester processes locally collected food waste to produce biogas and bio-fertiliser. Rokiah is particularly interested in developing technologies at a scale where they can benefit local people while helping communities understand and make better use of their own resources.

Rokiah's talk will run for approximately 45 minutes. Straight after the Campfire, we'll be holding the Permaculture Association’s AGM online - also for around 45 minutes.

You're very welcome to stay and join us. We'll look back at the year that’s just gone, look ahead to the year to come, and create space for members to ask questions and contribute to our vision for 2027 and beyond.
