Join us for the final night of a series of live events taking place across London this summer! FIELDNOTES Live is a new programme bringing together artists and writers working across sonic and textual terrains. We will be presenting ideas that are coming-into-being, poetic excavations and aural interventions.
This event is hosted by our friends at the ever great Avalon Cafe in South Bermondsey. The evening will include destructive methods, broken loops, instruments, machines, micro-listening, spoken word, synthesisers and esoteric interfaces.
Performers:
Hestor Dart
Alex Culshaw
Pheobe riley Law
Maison Phantasy
There will be publications on sale and drinks!
ABOUT
Hestor Dart is a singer, musician and maker with an interest in ugly sound, traditional crafts and collaborative practice. Their debut EP meet(me) was released in January 2025 with OVER/AT.
Alex Culshaw is an artist filmmaker, whose works explore social and personal narratives. By addressing the political and drawing on the poetic, her work confronts the reality of documentary and fiction filmmaking, storytelling and representation.
Pheobe riley Law is an artist working across sound, performance, installation, photography and sculptural activation. She makes work through sonic mapping, graphic scores and self-built motorised machines as collaborators. She is particularly interested in non-human actors, inanimate objects, and how human activity is shaped by systems of boundary-creation. Her latest performance installation, Vegetal Empathy, supported by the Sound Generator award 2024-25, is a speculative simulation of the garden, exploring our entanglement with more-than-human entities through data, micro-listening and acts of tending.
Maison Phantasy is the stage name of Fraser Scowen, a sound artist and instrument maker based in SE London. His musical practice presents an interplay between ambience and noise and is performed using his unique handmade modular synthesizers. Through the use of personalised instruments he aims to connect objects, the audience and the shared space, crafting a sonic environment for exploration and play. FIELDNOTES is an artist-run publishing project based in Newham in east London. We produce an annual print journal alongside a public programme of workshops, mentoring opportunities, radio broadcasts, screenings and readings. Founded in 2020, FIELDNOTES aims to promote and support non-conforming creative practices that pioneer new cultural forms. We seek to challenge the systemic inequalities that limit opportunities in the arts by working with individuals and communities who may not find support elsewhere. Our purpose is to provide a test site for poetic innovation, a place for new voices and collaborations, a venue for experimental modes and fresh departures between disciplines. We are interested in the third thing between two known things; we are looking for the spaces between translations and transitions.
