In the Mist

For more than five years, In the Mist has continued to travel through museums, cinematheques, and festivals worldwide, including Eye Filmmuseum (Amsterdam), BOZAR (Brussels), and Queer East Festival (London).

Set within a surreal gay sauna, the VR experience invites audiences into a space shaped by desire, memory, and intimacy. As they drift through its mist-filled rooms, the boundaries between gaze and being gazed upon, presence and absence, near and far gradually begin to shift.

Created during a time when physical contact became newly fragile, In the Mist reflects on spaces where strangers seek intimacy, connection, and recognition. It transforms the virtual sauna into a poetic meditation on loneliness, longing, and the vulnerability of being seen.

Recipient of the Panorama VR Prize at Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, In the Mist became the foundation for the award-winning multi-user VR experience Traversing the Mist, expanding its exploration of intimacy from an individual journey to a shared virtual experience.

Venue Info

The space is wheelchair accessible, but the primary area for In the Mist will be up a set of stairs. If you cannot use stairs but still want to experience the work, please let the Front of House volunteer know and suitable adjustments. Toilets in the space are all gender neutral.
