Robert Hugill’s & Joanna Wyld's chamber opera, The Gardeners returns for a second performance following its triumphant premiere in June.
'Quite a feat! ... It lingers in the memory' - Classical Source
Composed by Robert Hugill, with libretto by Joanna Wyld, this enduring modern opera sees tensions rise between three generations of the same family who look after war graves in a politically divided region.
This concert performance features Julian Debreuil (Wingate Foundation
Award winner), Peter Brathwaite (English National Opera 2017 / 2018),
Magid El-Bushra (Orchestre de Radio France), Flora Mcintosh (Anne
Zeigler Award winner) and Georgia Mae Bishop (Opera Holland Park young
artist 2019), with an instrumental ensemble conducted by the Artistic
Director of the London English Song Festival William Vann.
'Hugill's music has a moving serenity and stillness' - Opera Today
Set in a Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery in a war-torn
country amongst the family of gardeners who look after the cemetery, The Gardeners
treats the themes of tolerance, remembrance and brotherhood using the
garden as a metaphor for the possibility of growth and renewal.
The
graves belong to the Dead, who once invaded the land in which they lie.
Tensions rise between three generations of the same family who look
after war graves in a politically divided region.
'A beautiful piece, beautifully performed' - Seen and Heard International
The Gardeners was premiered at Conway Hall on 18 June 2019.
