This gentle and relaxed introduction to greenwood carving will be led by Fay Jones, The Woodland Haberdasher and Nick Gosman, founder of The Gosman Spoon Company, both local tutors with a wide range of experience in green carving and offering contrasting techniques and approaches. With a maximum group size of 12 people there will be plenty of hands-on support from Fay and Nick.

Plan for the afternoon...

They will guide you through the process of materials selection, design, carving and finishing techniques, after care and the use of various tools including axes, draw knives and shave horses. You will be able to choose the style of spoon or wooden cooking/eating implement that you wish to create, crank or straight handled, large or small, depending on your wishes. As your carved creations take shape, Judith, the resident cook at Fire and Feast, will light the woodfire and prepare a tasty two course supper cooked on wood for the group to enjoy together, creating a relaxed and convivial end to your Sunday afternoon. There will be time for questions and conversations and an opportunity to savour the beautiful Suffolk countryside as you carve and dine. Refreshments will be provided at the start and during the afternoon. Please come dressed suitably for the outdoors. On site parking available. Please note carving does require reasonable hand strength. Special dietary requirements can be catered for if advised in advance.

Your half day experience will include:

  • Freshly made hot / cold drinks and a sweet treat mid afternoon
  • Tuition throughout the afternoon from our experienced tutors
  • All equipment, tools and materials to create your spoon
  • Two course campfire supper with a selection of drinks
  • Your spoon / implement to take home at the end of the afternoon

Fay Jones aka the Woodland Haberdasher is based near Harleston and believes there is nothing quite like exploring the world through the wonderful variety of materials it provides. She helps people to have a go at making their own everyday things to connection to past and future through materials, objects and processes.

Nick Gosman started spoon carving to help improve his wellbeing, however, it has become more than just a pass time, its become obsessive! He believes in only using hand tools, no dusty, noisy workshop for him! The tools he uses would be recognised by wood carvers 100’s of years ago and his ethos is simple.., work with nature and with the natural fibres of the wood, including the knots! https://gosmanspoonco.com/

Judith is co-founder of Fire and Feast Suffolk and is the resident cook for our Saturday night suppers and Sunday brunch café. She also grows the onsite produce for the kitchen. She has been a fire cook for many years and enjoys experimenting with all types of fire cookery.
