Fix It Yourself covers repair skills over four hands-on workshops that take place on Friday afternoons at the Camden Fixing Factory. The course is designed to help you save money, cut waste and get hands-on fixing experience in a friendly environment.
By the end of the four sessions, you'll be able to assess, repair, and safely rewire almost any domestic lamp to an industry-standard level, including identifying, sourcing and using the correct replacement parts. But this course is about more than fixing lamps - it's about developing a repair mindset and learning a proven approach that forms an excellent foundation for repair work in general.
Each session builds on the previous one, but not to worry if you can't make them all - you can also attend each event individually.
Suitable for complete beginners. Participants must be at least 18 years old.
This course is perfect for you if want to:

Session overview:
1. Safe repairs and cables (28th August): Learn the basics of safe electrical repair and get hands-on with portable appliance testing Fixing Factory items.
2. Plug repair and rewiring (4th September): Discover how plugs work and practice safely rewiring plugs.
3. Switches and wires (11th September): Learn to fix faults in switches and wire a switch into a lamp.
4. Sockets and bulbs (18th September): Discover how to wire up bulb holders and assemble a lamp from scratch.
By the end of the sessions, participants will know how to safely build a lamp, troubleshoot simple electrical repair faults and understand the basics of safe electronics repair.
