About The Richard Exall Trio

Richard Exall

Richard studied clarinet at the Royal College of Music with Michael Collins and, self-taught on saxophone, formed his own jazz quartet and big band while at college. He became a well-known figure on the London jazz scene, performing with groups like the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Ink Spots. After college, he balanced careers in classical and jazz, playing with the London Symphonietta and in the West End. Richard co-founded the award-winning jazz quintet Root Position, which gained recognition across Europe.

In 1997, he toured the US and Europe with Jesus Alemany’s Cubanismo and performed with Latin groups like Orchestra La Clave, King Salsa, and Tumbaito. He also worked with major big bands such as The Glenn Miller Orchestra (UK), the London Swing Orchestra, and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra (UK). In the late 1990s, he became a regular on the vintage jazz scene with bands like the Pasadena Roof Orchestra. From 2004 to 2014, Richard toured Europe as a member of the Big Chris Barber Band before focusing on his solo career.

Richard is a composer, arranger, and performer who has worked with groups like Saxtet, The Magnificent 7 Jazz Band, and The London Swing Orchestra. He has performed with notable ensembles such as the Mike Westbrook big band and the Big Carla Bley Band. His recording and touring credits include collaborations with The United Funk Organisation, PJ Proby, Martha Reeves, and Ronnie Spector.

Richard leads Richard Exall’s Shooting Stars and is involved in projects like The Krupa Connection, The Magnificent Seven, and the award-winning Amy Roberts/Richard Exall Quintet. He regularly performs at jazz festivals across the UK and Europe, including Keswick, Pershore, and Swanage.

Mark Adams

Mark started playing bass after a childhood of singing in a cathedral choir. Determined not to make a full time career out of music, Mark has enjoyed a career of design and semi-pro playing and has backed some of jazz’s greatest stars such as Tommy Whittle, Roy Williams, John Barnes, Jack Parnell, Digby Fairweather, Clark Tracey, and now Richard Exall. This has led in turn to playing with many of the national jazz stars and bands with whom Richard is also involved. Mark runs an other-than-school educational facility, which includes design and the arts. He has restored his own antique double bass donated in ‘a bag’ by one of jazz’s national heros. Mark likes all music as long as it's "done well"!

Ed Arm

Eduardas Armonas, a Lithuanian-born jazz guitarist, calls the UK home. In 2013, he earned a degree from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, mentored by guitar greats Mike Walker, John Paricelli, and Colin Oxley. That same year, he launched the Ed Arm Trio - an organ trio with Liam Dunachie on organ and Dave Ingamells on drums - mixing jazz classics with his own inventive originals. He toured Europe with the trio, including bassist Mark Lewandowsky, known for gigs with jazz icons Dave Liebman and Wynton Marsalis.
