The Business, Creativity and Performance of Cirque — What It Takes to Put on a Show
What does it really take to put on an unforgettable circus production?
It takes much more than incredible performers.
Flashpoint Training is excited to welcome students to Beyond the Big Top, an immersive SPE-ICE experience with Studio Cirque, founded by former cirque athletes and a training school for cirque performers at all levels.
Students will go behind the scenes to explore all the moving parts required to take a show from an idea to the stage. They'll discover how business, creativity, athletic performance, health and wellness, marketing, design, storytelling, event planning and logistics all have to work together to create one successful production.
And, of course, students won't just talk about the circus. They'll have an opportunity to experience circus arts firsthand, learning introductory skills and discovering the athleticism, training, teamwork and creativity behind professional circus performance.
What Does It Take to Put on a Show?
Throughout the experience, all students will explore the complete production, regardless of their SHSM sector.
Students will be introduced to areas including:
- Business & Entrepreneurship — budgeting, revenue, operations and turning creative ideas into viable experiences
- Marketing & Promotion — branding, audiences, promotion, ticket sales and creating excitement around a show
- Event Planning & Logistics — scheduling, venues, equipment, staffing, transportation and coordinating all the moving pieces
- Creative & Storytelling — developing the concept, theme, characters and story behind a production
- Costume & Visual Design — creating the look and visual identity of the show
- Performance & Athletics — strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, choreography and performance
- Health & Wellness — physical preparation, safe movement, injury prevention, recovery and performer wellness
- Production & Behind the Scenes — understanding how different teams work together to take a production from concept to performance
Find Your Role in the Show
After exploring the entire industry, students will move into a functional area based on their individual strengths, interests and skills.
A creative student might gravitate toward storytelling or costume design. A student who loves numbers and organization might tackle budgeting or logistics. Future marketers could develop the promotional strategy. Athletes may focus on performance and physical preparation, while future event professionals could coordinate how the production actually comes together.
Each functional team contributes one piece of a larger challenge, giving students the opportunity to see both where their own strengths fit and how their work connects to everyone else's.
SPE-ICE
Students will complete a Face-to-Face Sector Partnered Experience – Innovation, Creativity and Entrepreneurship (SPE-ICE) facilitated by Flashpoint Training in partnership with Studio Cirque.
Using the circus and live-entertainment industry as their real-world context, students will work through the ICE process to tackle an authentic challenge: What does it take to create and put on a successful show?
Students will apply innovation, creativity, collaboration, problem-solving and entrepreneurial thinking within their functional teams before bringing their ideas together.
The result is one interconnected experience where students don't simply learn about careers — they discover where their own strengths could fit within an industry and what happens when people with very different skills work together toward one goal: putting on the show.
