Originally from the Portuguese Midlands and now based in Glasgow, Scotland, Miguel is a musician exploring the musical traditions of different corners of the world and fusing them with hints of classical and contemporary aesthetics.
"A new and genuinely unique voice in contemporary Scottish trad. You really haven't heard this before." Martin Green (Lau)
The Northern Isles suite is a collection of traditional tunes from Orkney and Shetland arranged for solo acoustic guitar by Miguel Girão. This piece of music draws influence from classical music, having a compositional/musical structure that has been used by many composers, for a multitude of different musical works across the centuries. It is also inspired by contemporary music, exploring new harmonies, inclusion of compositional elements at times stemming from fragments of traditional melodies, or sometimes introducing foreigner musical elements to the overall musical arrangement.
It brings together several musical worlds such as trad, jazz, classical, and modern music into one unified vision. It embodies Miguel’s love and interest for the culture of the Northern Isles of Scotland, and the musician’s quest to create an artifact that will contribute to the preservation and renewal of their cultural heritage.
“… one of the most technically gifted and expressive guitarists in Scotland.” Innes White
