Flight Free Schools: what, where, why and how
Avoiding flying for school trips is one of the most effective ways for schools to keep emissions down and reach climate targets. Flight Free UK's new scheme, Flight Free Schools, works with schools to help them remove or reduce the use of air travel for school trips.
This event will explain what the scheme is, how it works, and the practicalities of taking flight-free trips.
It is aimed at staff who take a lead on sustainability at schools across the UK, those who work with schools on sustainability projects, and anyone who is interested in sustainability in education.

About the speakers:
Anna Hughes is a behaviour change specialist and former teacher, who set up Flight Free UK to help flight-free travel move further into the mainstream. Flight Free Schools combines Anna's practical knowledge of school travel planning (while working for Sustrans, now Walk Wheel Cycle Trust) with the culture shift work of Flight Free UK. By working with young people, Flight Free Schools aims to create a generation of low-carbon travellers rather than frequent flyers.
Chris Graham is a biology teacher and Sustainability Lead at Hills Road Sixth Form College. He helped to put together the college's flight-free policy after carrying out a carbon assessment of the whole college's activities and finding that flights created a significant proportion of emissions. He will share how the policy affects each department and the trips they now go on, and how this has had an effect on staff, students and emissions.
Luke Pierce brings more than 25 years of experience in the travel industry helping schools organise ski trips. A significant part of Luke’s experience has involved coach-based travel to the Alps, giving him first-hand knowledge of how school ski trips can operate without relying on flights. Luke will explore the realities of moving school groups to the mountains without flying, including the practical challenges, the benefits, the impact on cost and journey times, and whether flight-free travel can become a realistic and attractive option for more schools.
Paul Turner is an award winning Geography teacher with nearly 15 years of experience creating innovative and dynamic learning journeys. He is Education Lead at the Ministry of Eco Education, a group of experienced and passionate teachers and environmentalists supporting action on the ground in schools across the country.
