About the Series
Advancing Justice in the Community Food Sector is a series of four workshops designed for folks — especially BIPOC — working in community-based programs and organizations that revolve around food. Working in these spaces, it's crucial to have the latest tools, knowledge, and skills to build pathways for professional career advancement.
Through this workshop series, participants will learn and engage with subject matter around: BIPOC solidarity across the non-profit sector, storytelling as a tool for impact, and more.
About this Workshop
The Heart of Stories in a Data-Driven World with Inda Intiar and Njoki Mbũrũ
In a world that often prioritizes data, how can we weave stories in our work to achieve meaningful systems transformation? We invite you to reflect on the simple yet profound idea that “stories are the soul of data.” Join facilitators Njoki Mbũrũ and Inda Intiar as we explore the transformative potential of storytelling and story-listening. Together, we’ll imagine how to tell community-centred stories that drive systems transformation within the community food sector, philanthropy, and beyond. By the end of this session, we hope you will feel emboldened to lead with imagination to support an impactful, community-centered storytelling and story-listening practice.

About Inda Intiar
Inda is a storyteller, facilitator and communications professional. She founded Akar Communications in 2023 so she could focus her work on storytelling that builds community, and explores possibilities for better futures. Inda is a first-generation Indonesian immigrant in so-called Canada who grew up across multiple countries in the Global South. Writing is Inda’s way of navigating identities, cultures, grief and joy from and in migration. Her approach reflects her continued learning and actioning of decolonization within herself and externally. She brings insights from studying journalism and international relations, as well as working in digital media, non-profit communications and grassroots community projects promoting equity for immigrant, racialized and underprivileged youth in New Brunswick and Indonesia. She lives in the Siknikt district of Mi’kma’ki, in which the colonially known city of Moncton, NB is located.
About Njoki Mbũrũ
Njoki Mbũrũ is a storyteller, poet, and imagination alchemist from Kenya by way of Germany and Canada. Having completed the LEVEL Youth Public Policy Program through the Vancouver Foundation in 2020, she continues to advocate for policies, projects, and partnerships that uplift the leadership of Indigenous and Black people and communities.
Between November 2022 to August 2023, Njoki completed a storytelling fellowship with the Community Foundations of Canada; an experience which propelled her to explore the relationships between public policy, emerging technologies, storytelling and power. Her most recent work was at the Tamarack Institute for Community Engagement where her primary focus was on facilitating and coaching place-based collaboratives whose mission is to build belonging. Alongside her powerful and passionate colleagues, she also supported the initial phases of creating a Pan-Canadian Strategy for Belonging.
As a foundational framework for her practice and thought, she is guided by the question: “What else is possible?”
